In my novel Gunman’s Legacy, Peter Dexter describes a time, at the end of the Civil War, when a troop on Yankee soldiers visited his town. He says, “The rabble that rode into our town were led by a young captain called Moss, he was a rancorous bastard. But he had a lieutenant called Sebastian Farrell who was a murderous son of a bitch. His eyes were pale as the sun-bleached sky and cold as ice and he seemed to take an especial pleasure in the nastier side of his job.” This will be the story of what happened.

Originating from oral storytelling traditions in the 17th century, the short story has grown to encompass a body of work of great diversity.  They have no formal length (in terms of word count); the story’s length being defined by the requirements for telling the story, itself. There is no official demarcation between an anecdote, a short story, a novella and a novel. However, a classic definition is that a short story can be read in one sitting, of course, the length of ‘one sitting’ is, itself, a variable feast.

Some definitions place the maximum word count for a short story at anywhere between 1,000 and 4,000 words. In contemporary usage, the term often refers to a work of fiction no shorter than 1,000 and no longer than 20,000 words, with stories of less than 1,000 words sometimes referred to as ‘flash fiction’.

Many famous authors wrote short stories including Ian Hemingway,  Rudyard Kipling, Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, James Joyce, Jack London and Rubén Darío.

Waiting is inspired by the style of Ernest Hemmingway in which he focused on reporting the immediate events and providing only a minimum of context, believing that the deeper meaning of a story should not be evident on the surface, but should remain unsaid , thereby leaving the reader to imagine the rest. Waiting focuses on four men who are waiting. While the reader gets to understand their current situation, it is for the reader to imagine why they arrived and where they will go.

In the severe winter of 1794/95, France crossed the frozen rivers that traditionally protected the Netherlands from invasion and quickly captured several Dutch cities. However, the freezing conditions also allowed a most unusual military action to take place on the night of the 23/24 January 1795.
