Plot Summary: Ammi, pregnant and 24 years old, flees New Delhi with millions of Muslim migrants in the early hours of the 1947 Partition of India, clawing her way through a controversial caste system and into the heart of Lahori society. Two of Ammi's beloved sons immigrate to the United States and secretly marry American brides. The three women who stand to lose everything in a collision of different belief systems must fight to keep their marriages, families and futures secure.
I enjoyed Whispers from the East very much. It is an easy read, with of a biographic feel about it. It describes the events of a number of people involved in cross-cultural relationships and the trials and tribulations they undergo. There is no dramatic plot although it includes some dramatic events, that if I am honest I would like to have seen expanded upon to raise the drama of the story. Having said that I found the narrative very engaging, the easy writing style encourages the reader and keeps the interest in the story, while the descriptive passages give one a real sense of place.
