Delville Wood by Ian S. Uys

Title: Delville Wood Author: Ian S. Uys ISBN: 0 620 06611 3 Genre: History - WWI Print Length: 299 pages

Summary: A detailed description of the Battle of Delville wood, based on interviews with veterans that took part in the battle.

This is an amazing book. The presentation of the interviews with the war veterans and their honesty of what happened to them and their friends make compelling reading. Although this focuses on only a few days of the battle (which lasted for months) and on the South Africans’ efforts to win and hold the wood, it gives a graphic picture of the horrors of the First World War to which all those who took part were exposed. A must read for anyone interested in WWI, but especially for anyone planning to visit the battle site.
