Plot Summary: The only living relation of Sophia, a thirty-something film editor, is her grandmother, Felicity, an eighty-three-year-old widow. Sophia lives in cluttered London, while Felicity lives in smart Connecticut. Sophia is torn between her delight in her freedom and a nagging desire for her family ties, but Felicity is temperamental. She has seen much of life and is prepared to see more. As the two women’s stories unravel, the past rears up in all its grimness and irony; but it also points to a future that may redeem them both.

Unfortunately I gave up on this book very quickly. I did not like its structure at all. Weldon kept going off on flights of fancy and introspection, which really disrupted the narrative, especially when she did it in the middle of conversations - breaking up the dialogue, in one case with side matter a page in length.
